Steroids in Athletics
Many MLB players have ruined their careers using steroids. Local players include Barry Bonds and Jose Conseco. The most recent occurrence struck Chris Davis of the Orioles, who tested positive for steroids. He is suspended for 25 games, extending into the post season. In order to stem the use of banned substances, officials restrict players to drinking only 15oz. of fluid in each twenty-four hour period prior to taking the test. Athletes are tested After the twenty-four hours are up. Many players claim that they were given the substance by their coaches and trainers without their knowledge. For example, Barry Bonds claims that he was not cheating and that his “Trainer had given him a clear substance and a cream and he did not know they were steroids.” Many fans and legislators, though, find this hard to believe.
concussions in the NFL
Football has been known for being a violent sport but no one really knows how dangerous it really can be. The most common injury in the NFL is concussions. A concussion is when your brain hits your skull inside due to a violent blow to the head or a violent jolt of the body. The NFL has disalowed helmet to helmet or “head to head” contact, it increases the risk of concussion because all of the contact goes straight to the head. The rule is so strict that if a hit looks even a tad out of line they review it to see if the player was leading with their head. If they are caught doing this they are ejected from the game to keep concussions to a minimum.
